Our manufacturing facility in Seven Hills extends over 8,000m² accommodating joinery manufacture, timber milling, timber veneering, painting operation, and metalwork. We pride ourselves in knowing our facility provides a controlled manufacturing environment enabling Rintoul to achieve the highest quality standards.
Whilst Rintoul’s ongoing investment in technology has equipped the facility with latest computer-controlled equipment for large scaled production, we believe in retaining our traditional skilled craftsmen for bespoke joinery items.
Established in 1921, Rintoul as we know it today originally operated under the name A W Edwards Partitions and Joinery. For over 100 years, Rintoul has been dedicated to serving the needs of commercial, governmental, and private clients. Throughout our history, we have partnered with many of Australia’s leading builders and construction firms, consistently setting the standard in custom-built fitout, building and joinery projects.
In 2018, Rintoul became part of Bouygues Bâtiment International (BBI), a division of Bouygues Construction. Bouygues Construction ranks as the fifth largest construction company globally, employing 32,500 people across more than 60 countries.

In 1921, Rintoul, as known today, was originally founded and operated under the banner of A W Edwards Partitions & Joinery. The division constructed spec cottages in and around the Eastwood NSW area. By 1929, due to growing demand, the division employed a staff of 40 workers with a permanent operating joinery shop in the Eastwood area.
From the residential success of the 1920s, the division expanded and completed their first commercial project in 1932 at Mount St. Margaret’s Hospital in Ryde, which flourished into a long-term client through to the mid 1950’s. Further opportunities arose with the Northbridge Golf Club, Grazcos House, Gatekeeper’s Lounge at Government House, and The Marlborough Hotel. Work was erratic in this decade due to the impact of the Depression on market conditions.
In a decade marked by war, A W Edwards Partitions & Joinery was called to service the building program needs of the government and military. Works included various phases at Ingleburn Army Camp, “Hospital Joinery” or large-scale model airplanes to act as decoys, air raid shelters, and other prefabricated demountable timber framed units. Working day and night to meet demand, the residents of Eastwood complained of the noise forcing the company to move to their second home at Wigram Road, Glebe. This would remain the company’s head office until 1984.
Coming off another decade of growth, the 1950s cemented the company’s standing in the market with renovation projects at Tivoli Theare before the Royal Gala Performance, Cinemas for Hoyts, and the Blackwood Hodge Factory in Granville. By the late 1950s, employment had nearly reached 500 and A W Edwards Partitions & Joinery was self-delivering all A W Edwards’ partitioning and joinery works as well as those of many other construction companies.
In 1962, on the advice of other construction companies not wanting A W Edwards’ name appearing on their site, Austin William (A W) Edwards made the decision to rebrand to Rintoul, Peg Edwards’ maiden name.
By the mid-1960s, Rintoul had developed its own partition systems and the need for greater modernisation of equipment led the company to expand to a bigger facility in Seven Hills. The new brand secured landmark projects such as The Marble Bar at the Hilton Hotel and the first projects with Qantas, who would ultimately list Rintoul as a nominated contractor. Qantas became a long-term client for the subsequent decades.
Rintoul’s strong 1960s continued into 1970 by being in some ways a beneficiary of the market shake-ups in 1972, 1975, and 1977. The company continued to support A W Edwards as they chased larger projects such as the Naper House in North Sydney, HCF on George Street, Mona Vale Hospital, re-erection of the Kings School Chapel, and the grandstand at Canterbury Racecourse
Rintoul’s master craftsmanship may have been best illustrated in the 1980s with the New Parliament House in Canberra and the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney.
The New Parliament House project used a wide range of hardwoods including Turpentine and Brushbox for the first time in detailed joinery. Works encompassed all the carpentry and joinery for the House of Representatives’ ceiling, the Great Hall, the Reception/Members’ Hall, the Theatrette, the Senator’s Suites and furniture for the Members’ Suites and the Grand Ballroom.
In parallel between 1984 and 1987, Rintoul pioneered the modular design and installation of over 3km of adaptable shopfronts in the Queen Victoria Building as well as bespoke handrailing in the iconic Sydney landmark.
In true pioneering spirit, Rintoul introduced a state-of-the-art acoustic test facility at the Seven Hills facility in 1991. This significantly contributed to the development of acoustic doors, acoustic walls, ceiling panels, and operable walls. Research and development from this lab resulted in innovations implemented in the ABC Sydney studio, as well as the Channel Ten and Seven studios.
Under the current leadership of the decade, Rintoul and A W Edwards combined operations in 1999 resulting in a restructure that saw A W Edwards take over the head contractor responsibility for fitout and refurbishment projects while Rintoul became solely focused on joinery manufacturing.
With a sole focus on joinery, Rintoul placed a large investment into the manufacturing facility at Seven Hills to service the growing demand of A W Edwards and other Sydney-based builders. Rintoul completed over 300 projects in this decade. Highlights include: the Victor Trumper Grandstand in 2008, Resmed HQ (including 1.8KM of architectural glass balustrades) in 2007, Mariott Hotel North Ryde in 2005, and 34 bespoke apartments in Potts Point in 2004.
Though fitout had been absorbed into A W Edwards, Rintoul led the Joint Venture contract to deliver the Qantas Club Extension in 2002. The project demanded the team successfully accelerate the highly detailed refurbishment to meet the challenging nationwide roll-out milestones.
Following A W Edwards’ trajectory into larger projects, Rintoul showcased its historic fitout capabilities delivering the innovative joinery package at the award-winning Concourse Chatswood between 2008 and 2011 and MA Noble, Don Bradman & Dally Messenger Stands in 2014.
The Chatswood Concourse included a full internal fitout of the 1,000-seat concert hall, specialised acoustically controlled rooms, with joinery and wall panelling for a 500-seat theatre, 500m² civic pavilion, 5,000m² library, new retail area, restaurants and cafés. The Concourse is one of our greatest prides of the decade.
Rintoul was acquired by Bouygues Batiment International (BBI), a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction in 2018.
The 2020s mark the next milestone chapter in Rintoul’s long history with a strategic modernisation of the company with conscious focus on leading the sustainability objectives within the group. In the first four years of the decade, Rintoul invested in 400kW of solar panels at our Seven Hills facility to supply the existing manufacturing process. Additional supply is diverted to A W Edwards and Rintoul sites promoting green energy use.
The decade has also witnessed the formal reintroduction of fitout into the business, the establishment of Workstation, and the digitization of our integrated management system and project processes. We are excited about the outlook and continued progress into the future.
